How to set up your worm bin
Composting bin

The first thing to do is prepare the bed.

Take shredded paper, cardboard and egg cartons. Add some Peat Moss and moisten this thoroughly. Squeeze out most of the water, like a sponge. Fluff up the bedding and pull apart any clumps. The bedding should be about 4" thick.

The next step is to add your worms..

Carefully place the worms and the contents of the bag the worms came in on top of the bedding. Cover the bin with a piece of moistened cardboard or burlap or some other type of lid. The worms are sensitive to light and vibration and they are not to happy with the handling process.. It will take them a few days to settle in. Sometimes the show there discomfort by crawling up the sides of the bin. If this should happen , remove the lid and let some light in. This should cause them to bury themselves back in the bedding.

The final step is where to place the bin

The bin can be placed inside or out. The best temperature range for the worms is 40 to 80 degrees. Avoid placing the bin in sunlight. If you manage your bin according to these directions, the bin should have no unpleasant odors, so placing the bin in a utility room or kitchen is not a problem.

One more thing is that if you do get an odor you are probably feeding them to much. Just cut back on the food and the odor should go away shortly.

Give the worms a few days to settle down before you start feeding them. Worms eat kitchen scraps, bread, cerals, rice pasta, crushed eggshells, all vegetables and just about anything but diary products and meats.
